Anula de Silva: Anula de Silva was born on 27th January 1941 in Polwatta village in Ambalangoda. Anula published her first novel "Unmanthkayo" in 1964. After that she completed her post graduate diploma in journalism in creative writing at University of Sri Jayawardanapura. Anula started her career as a teacher in 1964. During the same time she got the opportunity to join Lake House as a young writer; whereby she became a full time writer in "Mihira".
In 1982 she joined to the Wijaya News Papers as a first Editor to "Sirikatha" a women’s weekly. After few years she gave her the opportunity to contribute to youth development activities in National Youth Services Council in Sri Lanka. Few years later, she joined to the Wijaya News Papers again as a first Editor to "Vanitha Viththi" a women’s weekly. She conducted the radio programs on women.
She has written more than 125 books including novels, translations and children’s books. She used her women’s weekly, Radio programs and books to focus on women and their issues and how women should cultivate positive attributes and values to face their problems with courage. She believes women have an inbuilt strength to go through any issues in life, she wants women to seek their own strength. She is renowned for introducing courageous female characters from the world literary via her translations to the Sinhala readers.
We are privileged to confer on her the Dayawai Modi Stree Shakti Samman for year 2017.
